On output over time, DOE’s guidance on replacing a rooftop system states that a system’s power output diminishes slightly with time, and that most systems maintain at least 80 percent of their initial power output for at least 25 years.2 Those two statements together are the honest core of this topic: panels get gradually less productive rather than failing on a date.
Why the inverter matters more than people expect
The inverter converts the direct current the panels produce into the alternating current your home and the grid use, and it is where most system intelligence lives — including monitoring and, in advanced units, the ability to support grid stability.3 It is also the component most likely to need attention during the life of an array.
DOE explicitly lists updating components such as inverters among the ways system performance can be improved without replacing the whole system.2 When you compare proposals, look at the inverter warranty separately from the panel warranty rather than assuming one number covers both.
What maintenance actually looks like
DOE’s framing is that performance can be improved through regular maintenance and cleaning as well as component updates.2 In practice, for a typical Florida rooftop system, ownership tends to look like this:
- Watch production. Monitoring exists so you notice a decline that is faster than normal aging.
- Manage shade. Growing trees are the most common cause of production loss that has nothing to do with the panels.

- Expect inverter service or replacement at some point in the system’s life, and know what your warranty covers.

Reading warranty language without being misled

- Product warranty — the physical panel against defects.
- Performance warranty — a guaranteed percentage of original output at stated years.
- Inverter warranty — usually a different term than the panels.
- Workmanship warranty — the installer’s own coverage of the installation, including roof penetrations.
