Who Tampa Electric is, and why that matters
Tampa Electric Company is the electric utility serving much of the Tampa Bay area. The Florida Public Service Commission lists it among the investor-owned electric companies whose tariffs it publishes, alongside Florida Power & Light Company, Duke Energy Florida, and Florida Public Utilities Company.6
That classification is not trivia. It means the statewide Commission rule for interconnection and metering of customer-owned renewable generation applies here,5 and that the specific agreements, fees, and conditions a homeowner signs are filed documents in Tampa Electric’s own tariff. Step one: which tier is your system?
Tampa Electric asks you to download and complete the interconnection agreement matching your system’s rating, and it is explicit that the rating is measured in alternating current (AC).1 Most single-family residential rooftop systems fall in the smallest tier, but the sizing your installer proposes is what determines it — not your intentions.

Those tier boundaries, fees, and insurance amounts come from Tampa Electric’s own application instructions and its filed interconnection agreements. Tampa Electric also publishes a separate battery interconnection agreement for customer-owned battery subsystems of 1 kW or more, with its own insurance thresholds that step up above 15 kW AC.1 If storage is part of your plan, that is a second agreement, not a footnote — and whether you need a battery at all is worth settling first.
Step two: the documentation Tampa Electric expects
Tampa Electric’s published instructions list what has to accompany the application. For a residential-scale system, that includes:
- The completed interconnection agreement for the correct tier.
- A copy of, or a web link to, the manufacturer’s installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for the system’s inverter.
- A manual disconnect switch of visible load break type installed adjacent to the meter before inspection, with a photo submitted showing the required placard engraved or stamped as Tampa Electric’s electrical standards require.
- Proof of inspection and approval by the local code authority.
All four items come directly from Tampa Electric’s “Steps to Connect” instructions.1 Tampa Electric also states that for the smallest tier there is a maximum reimbursement associated with the disconnect switch, which differs for single-phase and three-phase service.1
Step three: submission, payment, and timing
Tampa Electric takes interconnection applications through its own online application system, with separate applications for solar, battery, combined solar-and-battery, and additions to an existing system. Where a fee applies, it is paid through the payment step of that process; Tampa Electric notes that homeowners in the smallest tier do not need to proceed to the payment step.1
On timing, Tampa Electric states that the interconnection approval process may take up to 30 calendar days from the date it receives a completed application and all required documentation, and that approval also depends on a successful inspection performed by Tampa Electric, including verification of an acceptable disconnect switch.1
Read that sentence carefully, because it contains the two most common scheduling surprises: the clock starts when the application is complete, and the utility performs its own verification after the local inspection.
